What is Recreation Therapy?

Recreation Therapy is a holistic, person-centered practice aimed at improving well-being and life satisfaction through meaningful participation in recreation and leisure. It is a practice suitable for all humans facing barriers to participation in activities of their choice. Programming is based on the interests, needs and abilities of each client and aim to assist in all dimensions of well-being including physical, emotional, social, psychological, intellectual and spiritual. The possibilities of recreation therapy are endless and can include community engagement, community recreation, crafts, gardening, a nice walk on a sunny day, listening to music, brain games, exercises, and so much more! Recreation and leisure are freely chosen pursuits based solely on the individual, their history and interests. Recreation Therapists simply assist in overcoming barriers to participation in activities, improving self-confidence and quality of life!

Relive

The first visits are for getting to know you and your unique story. I will take a detailed assessment that will assist in determining interests and barriers to help set goals for meaningful participation in recreation and leisure.

Revive

Once goals are set, we can implement Therapeutic Recreation programs. Activities can include musical visits, brain games, physical fitness, fresh air, and anything in between.

With a holistic approach, Therapeutic Recreation is completely individualized to fit the interests, needs and abilities of each person.

About Me

I'm Cassie, I am a private practice Recreation Therapist in beautiful Stratford, Ontario. I graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2011 with a major in Honours Therapeutic Recreation and a minor in Psychology. From there, I have over 10 years experience in Long Term Care in both a Recreation Assistant and a Director role. Working in Long-Term Care gave experience with a variety of people with various abilities and interests. I was able to gain experience in adapting many programs to fit these needs and overcome limitations to participation. I could not have asked for a better place to start my career! I obtained a registration designation through Therapeutic Recreation Ontario in 2017. My goal is to bring my experience and expertise to the community through a private practice that is accessible to everyone. I hope to empower those that feel they can no longer do those things they enjoy and adapt them to fit their needs and abilities, contributing to overall improved life satisfaction.

My passion in this world is to help others and this is my goal and driving force with any work that I do.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to me directly.

Musical Entertainment and Sing Along

During my time in Long Term Care, I learned how to play the ukulele and found this to be such a positive source of joy and reminiscence to the residents there.

I have compiled many songs from each decade from the early 1900s and love to play them in a group setting.

I love getting those toes tapping!
